The race was started in 1958 by Major James de S. La Terriere and was intended originally for shepherds, keepers and other locals.

Height difference 1000 ft (690' to 1690') - 305 meters
Distance 1 mile - 1.6 kilometers

Mens' records:- 2000 Alan Milligan - 19mins 50 secs
Womens' record:- 2001 Kate Jenkins - 25 mins 19 secs
